Sachi at Pantechnicon

A Deep Dive by Frankie Bagel

An incredible grade II listed warehouse greets you from the pedestrianised street and the second I walk in, I feel a calm wash over me. It almost feels like I’ve walked into a luxury spa, or it would do if it wasn’t teeming with those sampling the delights.

I’m a little early so I pop upstairs to the roof garden and make myself comfortable on the cosy terrace, flicking through the menu for this evening. Their entry-level wine price is £40 which is pretty standard for this area of town and cocktails range from between £13 - £23. I plump for a rhubarb and tea champagne cocktail because, well, it’s a Friday night and why not. It’s light, boozy and refreshing. A delight. It’s quiet but they have vibey music coming from their outside speakers so it’s a nice atmosphere. They also have heaters and it’s covered, which makes it a lovely spot to retreat to if you’re in the area. They also have food up there too if you need some sustenance. I didn’t sample it but the menu looked great and the smell was insane. The staff are really friendly and there is a totally unpretentious vibe all-round.

There are various spots to eat in this fabulous hotspot. All are Nordic or Japanese-influenced. I opt for Japanese at Sachi as I’ve heard so many good things. I finish up my spritz and head downstairs to find a wonderfully atmospheric venue with original brick and wooden ceilings. There are intimate tables perfect for a date and even a section that closes off for a private event. I’m sitting at the counter as I’m by myself (also LOVE a counter).

It’s the perfect spot to watch the expert chefs prepare the super fresh sashimi. Another one of the super friendly staff members comes and advises me what to eat and drink. I’m excited. I tell the waitress I love Margheritas and she tells me I must have the Yuzu salty dog. It comes and it’s delicious.

I start my food odyssey with seabass carpaccio which is fresh and tasty with a spicy sauce draped on top. Then comes their tuna roll. It’s some of the moistest and flavoursome maki I’ve had in a long time and teamed with the delicately sliced ginger on the side, it’s a feast for the senses. The waitress gets me even more excited when she says, ‘if you like this, wait until you try the aubergine’. I’m all in. Next comes the short rib. It arrives delicately assembled with a side of enoki mushroom and shredded vegetables. All is a taste sensation. Moist, tender, delicious. The famous aubergine arrives and does not disappoint. Drenched in miso, It’s luxurious. The sharp pickled green tomatoes comes with slices through the richness perfectly. It’s all about balance and Sachi gets this balance 100% right. I’m super full and probably didn’t need that last dish!

Things I didn’t get to try: sashimi and lobster tempura. The Tempura is £40 so pricey but will be trying it next time. It’s an expensive evening, but I leave feeling sated and happy. One for a special occasion I think, or if you’ve got the bucks, why wouldn’t you go on a random weekday evening?

Nice to note that Pantechnicon allows pooches everywhere but downstairs in Sachi.
